Chattanooga, Tenn. (August 18, 2022) –
Hamilton County Schools Future Ready Institutes launched a partnership with Komatsu Chattanooga Manufacturing Operation (Komatsu) and more to create a pre-apprenticeship program on August 18, 2022.

Red Bank High School student David Angland signed on to the Komatsu pre-apprenticeship program as the first Hamilton County student to enter the program. This work-based learning program will provide on-the-job training for students as a part of their school curriculum.

“We are excited about the partnership and opportunity that a relationship with Komatsu can have for our students and community,” said Red Bank High School Principal, Chris Tillett. “David’s signing is a big moment as we work to move from just ‘talking’ about the future to actual work experiences that help students with their vision for a successful future. We look forward to the success story that David will be as he blazes a trail for future students.”

Although the inaugural class of pre-apprenticeship students is small, the launch of this program will continue to grow and serve our students as an extension of Future Ready and CTE options in HCS.

“These are exciting times for us as we seek to share our experiences as a manufacturer with students who have a desire to work in this field,” said Komatsu General Manager, Walt Nichols. “We have gone to great lengths to create a program that is exciting, educational, safe, and that will provide real work experience to the students chosen for the program.”

HCS continues to create meaningful programs and partnerships for students to find pathways to brighter futures through Future Ready Institutes, CTE Programs, and early college programs. The district believes in our students and seeks to continue growing the opportunities provided to our students to create successful and meaningful careers after graduation.

“This is an exciting moment for the students of Hamilton County Schools because we are opening a door not only to Komatsu but to all of Chattanooga,” said Olivia Bagby, Future Ready Students Director. “It is when partners like Komatsu take a leap with us, that the community sees what our students are capable of. Pre Apprenticeship opportunities give students more than work experience but the opportunity to gain confidence in themselves as they take their first step into their postsecondary life. We are so excited to see where David's path takes him as we continue to work diligently to provide more students with opportunities of all kinds.”
